Make your good habits hard to break!

Each summer at a Waterpark you work hard to install good habits.

One of those for me was a daily closing routine of hosing down the decks and especially the front entrance. The closing guards would know what to do and when to do it without being told.

Come the end of summer our general manager would see the hosing and tell me just to save the labor and send everyone home.

After all, he said "the decks look clean already"

What would happen is that the routine would get forgotten and slowly but surely the dirt and stains would appear and everyone just got used to seeing them and they became part of the facility.

Next spring when the park got busy again, the GM would call during the opening duties and demand that someone hose immediately and was frustrated that no one had seen the dirt.

Understandably so.

After a couple of years of this stop/start, damned if you do damned if you Don't cleaning routine I was able to convince the GM to just let me continue the routine of nightly hosing regardless of the time of year.

I just scaled down the amount but made sure the critical areas were done.We went back to staying on top of deck cleanliness and rarely got caught out.

Did the decks really need to be washed down daily? No. But remember my saying,

'what you pay attention to gets noticed'

The word habit and routine has a negative association but I think it means consistency.

Consistency is only noticed when its missing!
