The Japanese have a term called 'Kaizen', which stands for approximately,

'small changes that make constant improvement'

Integral to this is the 5 'S' system. In the Japanese 5 'S' system http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5S_(methodology) , which stands for (roughly)

  • sort

  • set in order

  • shine

  • standardize

  • sustain

one theme which runs through all the standards is the use of visual cues.

So, taking a tip from this I started to apply this to our pump room, specifically

  • labeling the valves for backwashing and

  • where to find and store the brush used for cleaning the filter baskets.

  • The 'b' shows where the valve should be pointing for backwashing and the 'f' shows normal filtration position.

I posted the following pics to show how you can use visual cues more or feel pretty good that you are already using visual cues to make your work better.
